I'd work a couple of jobs over Xmas and borrow the college money. Nothing wrong with borrowing for college, investing in yourself and all that.
Sounds like you can get an education in wrenching you bike by doing as much as possible yourself after getting the direction from a local shop like Hogryder suggested.
Don't try passing the bike off to someone who doesn't know better. Bad karma and all that type of thing. It's not 'nice' or good. I'm just a believer that what goes around, comes around.
Has you dad offered to kick in to help get the bike running again? Not necessary to answer that one.
And of course, DON'T PANIC!
